The Huayhuash Trek is considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular in the world, a trek that takes place among the Peruvian Andes, and that will leave you speechless to describe the wonders your eyes will see. On our 16-day expedition we cross various landscapes that make up this renowned and famous trek.

The expedition departs from Lima, where you will be welcomed by your guide who will take you to the hotel. The next day we will drive to Huaraz, a town located 3,000 meters above sea level. We will use the first two days as part of our acclimatization to the altitude visiting the surroundings of Huaraz.

Then, we head towards the Huayhuash mountain range to start our 10-day trek.
Throughout the expedition we will encounter beautiful light green valleys, imposing snowy mountains, spectacular sunrises, turquoise lakes, glaciers and breathtaking landscapes. We will also witness the best sunrises of our lives.
For those who wish, there is also the opportunity to ascend the Nevado Diablo Mudo reaching 5400 m where we will have a spectacular view of the entire Huayhuash mountain range! A journey that should be on your wish list as a traveler.

DAY 1: Arrival in Lima

We pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel in the district of Miraflores. After a long flight we can enjoy a nice Dinner in a nice restaurant. Lima is world known for its Gastronomy.

DAY 2/3/4: Lima – Huaraz

After enjoying a nice breakfast we leave Lima in our private bus towards the city of Huaraz. Huaraz is located at an altitude of 3.100m in the Callejón de Huaylas, between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra.
The first two days we will adapt to the altitude and to know the Andean culture by going on day hikes and returning to spend the night in Huaraz.
We will talk about the options on site.

DAY 5: Huaraz (3100m) – Matacancha (4150m)

We leave Huaraz early in the morning after breakfast. Our drive goes through traditional Andean villages. We reach the area called Matacancha or Quartelhuain (4150 m), where we set up our first base camp. From this location we have a beautiful view of the north faces of Rondoy (5870 m) and Ninashanca (5607 m) mountains. In the afternoon we can discover the surroundings on our own.

DAY 6: Matancacha (4150m) – Mitucocha Lake (4250m)

After a spectacular sunrise and a good breakfast we start our trek. From Matacancha we climb to our first high – pass called “Paso Cacananpunta”at 4,700m. The whole area is characterized by light green valleys and gigantic rock formations which are a real spectacle.
From there we descend immediately towards Lake Mitucocha, at 4,150 m. From here we have a great view of the east side of the Jirishanca (6,094 m) mountain.

DAY 7: Mitucocha Lake (4250m) – Carhuacocha Lake (4140m)

After breakfast, we leave the clear waters of Lake Mitucocha and continue hiking along the mule track to the second high pass called Carhuac at 4,650m. On the other side of the pass, the route continues to the spectacular Carhuacocha Lake, which is at 4,140 m. There we have an extraordinary view of the wild east side of the mountains Carnicero, Jirishanca, Yerupajá and Siulá Grande. We set up our camp in a beautiful location.

DAY 8: Carhuacocha Lake (4140m) – Huayhuash (4350m)

​​We start from Carhuacocha to the third high pass (4800m) and continue our hike to the small village of Huayhuash. This will be one of the best sunrises of our trip. The east walls of Yerupajá, Siulá Grande and Jirishanca will turn into a bright orange color that we will hardly forget. We pass the hanging glaciers of the Yerupajá (6,634m) and the Siula Grande. There are also 3 beautiful lakes that are fed by these glaciers. Uninterrupted avalanches slide into this lake landscape at the foot of these mountains.
This day is the longest and perhaps the most arduous, but we will also cross one of the most beautiful areas.

DAY 9: Huayhuash (4350m) – Viconga Lake (4450m)

We start the day ascending to Portachuelo Pass (4750m). From there we will see the beautiful Viconga lake (4480m). A few meters away from the lake we will find natural hot springs that belong to the rural community of Uramaza. We will camp next to an exceptional pool with hot water at 4.400m/14435.7ft.
This day is the shortest on the circuit. We will use it for leisure, rest and relax.

DAY 10: Viconga Lake (4450m) – Huanac Patay (4300m)

Today we go through the fifth pass and the highest point of our trek, Punta Cuyoc (5.000m). At this point we will be entering towards the west side of the mountain range.
The ascent runs along a bridle path that zigzags until almost reaching the Cuyoc glacier. Before finishing this day, we will see almost all of the huge west faces of Yerupajá Grande, Chico and Rasac (6.017m). In this valley we will make our camp.

DAY 11: Huanac Patay- Huatiac

This day we will reach the “lowest” part of ​​our trek, starting the day descending until we reach 3500 m. We will arrive in the town of Huayllapa, a very typical place in the high Andean area and where some of our Staff are from. The visit to the town is optional, since we must continue the trek up to 4250m to our camp called Huatiac.

DAY 12: Huatiac (4250m) – Gashcapampa (4625m)

From this quiet village we will ascend to the sixth step of height, Tapush Pass(4.800m). After reaching this pass, we will descend for an hour to Gashcapampa, a small “corral” (fence) of stones where we will set up camp.

DAY 13: Ascent Nevado Diablo Mudo (5350m) – Jahuacocha

Snowy Diablo Mudo Ascension Day! We leave the camp at 3am and we go at night to the glacier of this beautiful mountain, which we reach at dawn, there we will put on our mountain equipment: from here our ascent begins through a beautiful and safe ridge until we reach the summit of the 5400m high Diablo Mudo. The view of the entire Huayhuash mountain range is really great! We will climb its west face and descend its east face through a huge valley to the Jahuacocha Lagoon.

DAY 14: Rest day

Today we enjoy our free day at Jahuacocha Lagoon. Optionally we can visit the Lagoon Solterococha.

DAY 15: Jahuacocha – Llamac – Huaraz

From Jahuacocha we will take a very colorful trail that ascends to a small viewpoint with amazing views of almost the entire mountain range. We will arrive at Llámac at mid-day, from where we will return to Huaraz and enjoy the comfort of taking a hot bath and sleeping in a Bed.

DAY 16: Huaraz – Lima

On the already known route we take our private bus southwards again. One last time we see the Cordillera Huayhuash in all its glory before the road meanders from 4200 m down to the sea. On the coast road we reach Lima. After settling in at our hotel in the Miraflores neighborhood, we can enjoy a gastronomic experience in one of the many restaurants that Lima offers. As you know, Peruvian gastronomy is one of the best known in Latin America.
